Michigan Upper
Peninsula So ends U.P. Cruising's 1st Annual Just Ride Week
I put over 1500 miles in the review mirror during Just Ride Week 2008. I had some great riding weather, found some great roads and met some interesting people along the way. I kicked off the ride will a four hour road trip up Wisconsin Hwy 51 to Hurley and then tracked US-2 over to Highway 122 up into the western U.P. After discovering Michigan Highway 505 was washed out at Little Girl's Point, I had to backtrack into Ironwood, Michigan to start my trek across Michigan's Upper Peninsula. My first stop was the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. I've been to the park many times, but today I wanted to ride Highway 107 along the Lake Superior lakeshore on up to Lake of the Clouds. Even with the cold waters of Lake Superior, there were quite a few vehicles pulled over an swimmers testing the waters. Stopping at the entrance booth to get my entrance sticker, there was no mistaking the sound of five Harleys as they came rolling down out of the park. I only wish I would have had my camera ready as it would have made for a great photo.
If you've never seen the Porcupine Mountains, then it's something you really need to do. At Lake of the Clouds, it's only a short walk to the overlook. At the south end of the park, the Presque Isle Campground offers a look three of the Upper Michigan's better waterfalls.
I think most of us who ride know that where one motorcycle parks, more will follow. I know if I see a bike parked in front a motel or restaurant, I will likely choose to pull over there as well if I'm looking for a place to stay or eat. So was it my first night on the road during Just Ride. I no sooner pulled into this vacant motel parking lot when two more bikes came along. Later that night another joined us. I'll contact the owners of the motel later, but I somehow doubt they understood how fortunate they were to have one motorcycle pull in for the night. The next morning I got to talk with the other bikers as we were all outside loading up and cleaning off the bugs that had decided to paint a colorful mural on our windshields. One couple was on their way from Lower Michigan doing the Lake Superior Circle Tour. New to the area, I gave them a couple complimentary U.P. Cruising Cards and told them it was only a short walk to the Bergland Bay Bar. The next morning they told me how much they enjoyed what is probably the best frozen bar pizza anywhere. Of course, following it down with an ice cold, frosty mug of cold beer never hurts. By morning another rider from Minnesota had stopped at the motel. He was on his way home form Nova Scotia. Now there was one ride I would have liked to hear more about, but we were all in a hurry to get moving. Place to see, roads to ride. Across the street was a restaurant called Antonio's so I rode over there and had what turned out to be a pretty good breakfast. Continued.....
