 The Vietnam Moving Wall

I timed my ride so I would be in Manistique to visit the Vietnam War Moving Wall.  While I never in Vietnam, I served in the US Navy during the war and I had a number of friends who either didn't make it back or came back severely injured.

Manistique, Michigan

Even though I grew up in Manistique I don't spend much time there any more.  All of my family has either passed on or moved to different areas.  Still I have some fond memories of my years there and having something like the Moving Wall bring me back is a good thing.

Vietnam War Moving Wall

Had I not made the trip to Washington to see the Vietnam Wall, I'm sure I would have felt things much more.  Still, it was good to see all the people walking along the wall paying their respects to those that paid the ultimate price.  I'd like to say a personal thanks to all those in Manistique who helped bring the Moving Wall to Manistique.  I know a number of bikers emailed me that they would be stopping by to visit the Moving Wall.

A long over due visit

I made one last stop in Manistique before heading on and that was the cemetery where my parents and grandparents were laid to rest.   Seeing all the American Flags throughout the cemetery was quite impressive and it was especially comforting to find one American Flag placed near my father's grave.  Like so many other World War II veterans, he was very proud to have served during that war.  And like so many others in the cemetery, he had the fact he served carved into his tombstone.

Indian Lake

After getting a room a local motel in Manistique, I took a ride out to visit the place where I grew up.  Indian Lake was a great place to be a kid.  Probably still is but as I rode along the lake shore I didn't see any children playing anywhere.  It pretty much looked like old lakeside homes were being replace with modern vacation homes.

As I pulled over at the Copenhagen Bridge, I could see a few swimmers enjoying what has to be one nicest little places to take a swim in the U.P.  If I had been the only one there, I just might have taken one more jump from the bridge.  For most of my childhood this old bridge played a big part of my life.  Oh well, only so many memories for one day, so I headed back to town.
