Pentoga Trail

One road on my list to ride for some time was a short piece of highway called the Pentoga Trail.  The road had been recently recommended to me and since it was on the way I decided to make a detour to check out the road.

Looking west down Highway US-2

Coming east out of Iron River, I missed the Pentoga Trail road the first time by and wound up riding through Crystal Falls on US-2 and turning west on via Highway 424, going through the little town of Alpha to find the south end of the Pentoga Trail.  Looking at that little sign above, you can see why you might miss it.   How you know you missed it is when you find yourself riding past the Bewabic State Park.  The Pentoga Trail is located about one mile west of the park.

Take it from me, this is one sweet piece of highway.  It's a great feeling as you cruise along under a canopy of Maples lit up streaks so sunshine hitting the road.  The road includes some nice turns and even a small hill or two.  At one point the road opens up and you find yourself riding the shore line of Chicagon Lake which includes riding by some very nice vacations homes.   Note: Please go slow here as there are a lot of little children playing near or on the road.

It's a small world some times.  Located on Pentoga Trail is the Batawagama Youth Camp.  The minute I saw the sign, I knew it was the camp that my daughter attended when while we lived in Gladstone, Michigan.  I had forgotten all about it.  It's surprising how many memories stay hidden under the surface only to pop out like they were yesterday.

I'd of paid the youth camp a visit, but reconsidered when I drew this mental picture of this old bald headed biker pulling into camp.  I'm sure the last thing the camp counselors wanted to see was bikers rolling into their camp.

I enjoyed the ride down Pentoga Trail so much, I did it again.

It's said that good things sometimes come in small packages.  So it is for the Pentoga Trail.  If you're riding by it won't take you much out of your way, but I think you'll be glad to chose to ride the Pentoga Trail.
