Upper Michigan Welcomes
Can Am Spyders

Can Am Spyder Roadster

In February of 2007, Bombardier Recreational Products unveiled the Cam Am Spyder Roadster. At first look, I think most Yoopers would first see it as snowmobile that had it skis and track replaced with wheels.  The Can Am Spyder Roadster definitely gets a second look from anyone who sees it.

It was back in March when I first became aware that a group of Cam Am Spyders were planning a ride up to Michigan's Upper Peninsula.   After learning about the Can Am Spyder, the thought of seeing a group of these unique vehicles cruising across the U.P. got my interest.  So in addition to listing their rally on the U.P. Cruising website, I asked the rally organizer Deb Tangen if I could hook up and ride along.  She quickly welcomed me to join them for their ride.

Unfortunately I had to cut my ride short, but Deb has been good enough to share some photos and information about the ride, which I'm passing on to you.  A total of eight Can Am Spyders made their way to St. Ignace, Michigan on August 1st, 2008 accompanied by two Harleys.  Their ride covered over 1300 miles by time they returned to Lower Michigan.

The group chose the Cedar’s Motel in St. Ignace to stage their rides in the U.P. and according to Deb, Tim and Kathy, the owners of The Cedar’s Motel were great hosts.  Before heading out on the ride, riders were greeted each morning with a nice continental breakfast that included French toast, donuts and a nice variety of cereals and breads for toast. As Deb puts it, "the rooms were very comfortable and very clean and cute as heck."

On the first day the group rode north to tour the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan before heading over to Whitefish Point Light and then down to Taquanamon Falls.  It must have been pretty impressive seeing eight of these unique looking roadsters come cruising by.

The second day took the group on a ride up to Munising and then over to Marquette for a group cookout.   Along the way they stopped at a place called Lakenenland.  I must of rode by this place at least a couple times and never pulled in.  Something I intend to do next time by.  Looks like an interesting place to say the least as you can see by the below photo.

So how did this first Cam Am Spyder Rally to Michigan's Upper Peninsula go?  Well  I think Deb Tengen says it best, "All, in all, I would say it was a successful weekend.  I met a lot of new and wonderful Spyder friends.  We will be doing some more rides soon I am sure.  This is most definitely our 1st ANNUAL ride.  I learned some things and will probably change some things for next year but it is all about the ride and the great people.  I hope more of you can join us next time.  The beauty and hospitality is amazing"
